Gdansk, city of my childhood. I love, loved and always will love this city. I often call myself “Gdanszczanin” or as some of my German friends call me here “Danziger” and I am very proud to be born and grew up there. It is the only place on earth which “talks” to me - certain places, certain buildings, parks or monuments they bring up memories which are so personal so difficult to describe - they are my soul, they are what I am.
Having moved out of Poland in 1981 I have one very dear friend left in Gdansk and one cousin whom we manage to visit as well. My friend’s name is Marek, we used to work together for LOT Polish Airlines. His lovely wife is named Danusia.
The first day in Gdansk, after nice breakfast we went for a long walk. I visited all the important for me place like place where I used to live, my route to elementary school, my elementary school, old town where I used to hang around. We even got lucky to visit my old neighbor whose son I went to school with. We stopped for lunch along Motlawa River in one of those “Smazalnia Ryb” - place where they served fried fish - had a nice halibut and cold beer - I had been dreaming about that very meal ;-)) It was marvelous walk but it was impossible to visit all the places within one day so……I need to come back and do more walking. We came back to Marek’s place “dead tired. While we were walking around Danusia prepared marvelous supper for us.
Next day we went to Leba. I have many memories associated with this small town. I used to go there for summers when I was a kid, my ex-wife was from there and her Mother is buried there. I wanted to see her grave, pay my respect, look around etc. Beside it is a lovely place to visit during summer anyway. So anyway early morning we left Gdansk and arrived in Leba around 10:00 am. I went straight to visit my ex-Mother resting place. After that we went for walk along the beach. Had wonderful lunch - you guessed it - halibut again
Went along fishing port - I have done it so many times in the past - checked old house, we just hung around untill it was time to go back to Gdansk.
Next day after very nice breakfast we left for Malbork, home of knights of Teutonic Order. Wow, it is quite a castle, one of its kind in Poland and of of very few like that in Europe. We spent lots of time there and took lots of pictures (check’em out). It took us all day, in the evening serious ride down memory line. I met my friends whom I worked with in LOT Polish Airlines in Gdansk. wow, it was such a nice evening indeed. We talked and talked about past. I think we all tend to rememebr good things while we forget bad experiences hence past seems always “rosy”. Well, it was like that for us or maybe we were just young and everything seemed so different, better then. Anyway, they kept the place open just for us till late night hour, I was so glad to meet you all my friends there. Thank you’ll for coming ;-))) when we came back home Danusia was still waiting for us with a fabulous supper so we had a bite before we hit the sack.
No rest for the wicked …..hehehehe, next day we went to Sopot where we met Ula. We went down “Monciak” straight to Molo.
