Our World

03_02_14 till 16 Stanley Mitchel Hike

It was a long weekend with lots of snow in the mountains. Few of us outdoor buddies got together and decided to ski to Stanley Mitchell Hut deep into the backcountry. It is over 26 km from Takakkaw Falls parking lot. It is doable in one day but why kill yourself rushing it? So we decided to cover first 12 km or so to Takakkaw Falls picnic shelter. Pitch our tents, do little bit of winter camping, hide tents next day and cover remaining 14 km or so to Stanley Mitchell. This is exactly what we did. By the time we reached Takakkaw Falls it was getting dark, just enough time to dig little wells for our tent and get organized for the night. We had nice meal at the shelter and dove into our sleeping bags. Next day after breakfast we were on our way again. We reached Stanley Mitchell hut in the afternoon tired but happy. After small meal we went out to explore the area, we had it all to ourselves since there was nobody else there. It is truly beautiful there and if ever get a chance to go there regardless in winter or summer just do it. The hut is very specious and comfy with big fireplace. Next day we had to ski out all the way out. Shortly after we left “disaster struck” – I fell and broke one ski. Well, this was serious predicament since we were 25 km into the mountains, I had no snowshoes and snow was on average deep to my waist- impossible to walk. I cut small tree, cut piece out of it and lashed it to my broken ski. If you want to see all pictures click here
